If you were tasked with pinpointing the biggest lie of 2013, where would you start?
What if you were tasked with pinpointing the biggest POLITICAL lie?
PolitiFact is a Tampa-based organization that purports to find the truth in politics. They even have a scale to show how truthful or untruthful a statement is.
A quick review of their home page reveals they have a definite bias to how they interpret what is true and not true.
But one thing they could all agree on was the biggest lie of 2013. That dubious honor fell to none other than…
The sitting U.S. President, Barack H. Obama!
“If you like your health care plan, you can keep it.”
PolitiFact found that Obama made this statement and variations of it 37 different times over a period of a few years.
For example, in a high profile speech given to the American Medical Association in 2009, he said, “If you like your health care plan, you’ll be able to keep your health care plan, period. No one will take it away, no matter what.”
Yet some 4.8 million plans have already been canceled.
And that’s just the start.
Some experts estimate at least 16 million insurance plans will be canceled as Obamacare is fully rolled out.
When Obama and his team were called out for lying to the American public, they did not apologize. Rather, they tried to fight back and cover up their tracks.
On October 28, 2013, Valerie Jarrett said, “FACT: Nothing in #Obamacare forces people out of their health plans.”
Another blatant lie.
When this didn’t work, Obama tried to rewrite history. On November 4, he claimed, “Now, if you have or had one of these plans before the Affordable Care Act came into law, and you really liked that plan, what we said was you can keep it if it hasn’t changed since the law passed.”
Unfortunately, we have this thing called “video.” Many of Obama’s speeches are recorded and can therefore be checked to reveal the truth. And, no surprise, Obama was lying yet again to cover up his initial lies.
This is what earned him the “Lie of the Year” award — and rightfully so!
And lest you think I’m singling out Obama, let me assure you I am not. I’ve been equally critical of George W. Bush, Mitt Romney, Rick Santorum, and other “right wing” politicians.
Here’s the lesson…
All. The. Time.
That is how they win votes. They make promises knowing full well they cannot make good on them.
But they do it anyway.
Lying is also how politicians try to preserve their image and start wars. Examples:
“I am not a crook.” -Richard Nixon
“I did not have sexual relations with that woman.” -Bill Clinton
“The Iraqi regime… possesses and produces chemical and biological weapons. It is seeking nuclear weapons. We know that the regime has produced thousands of tons of chemical agents, including mustard gas, sarin nerve gas, VX nerve gas.” -George W. Bush
“There is no doubt that the regime of Saddam Hussein possesses weapons of mass destruction. As this operation continues, those weapons will be identified, found, along with the people who have produced them and who guard them.” -General Tommy Franks
All of these statements… lies.
Part of survival is developing the ability to see the world AS IT IS and not AS YOU WISH IT TO BE.
I have no illusions about U.S. leaders.
They are, by and large, pathological liars who seek their own power and enrichment.
Don’t let them lull you into complacency.
You may find one day that the price you pay for complacency — or worse, outright trust — could be steeper than you ever imagined.
Don’t be scared. Be prepared.
